A Letter from a Father to his Son and a Letter from a Mother to her Son.

This week, I have run across a couple readings from parents to their children. One comes from King St. Louis and another comes from Blessed ConcepciĆ³n Cabrera de Armida of Mexico. I wanted to share them here with all of you. Letter from a Father to his Son: In my daily Mass homily on Tuesday, August 25 on the Feast of St. Louis, I read a letter from the Office of Readings, one of the daily prayers we pray everyday as priests, from King St. Louis to his son. I wanted to post it here for you to read for yourself these beautiful words of St. Louis: Office of Readings for St. Louis From a spiritual treatise to his son by Saint Louis My dearest son, my first instruction is that you should love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your strength. Without this there is no salvation. Keep yourself, my son, from everything that you know displeases God, that is to say, from every mortal sin. You should permit yourself to be tormented by every kind of martyrdom before you would allow your...

Seminarian Intern

Image
On August 24th, we will be welcoming to the parish Mr. Patrick Blenman.  He is a seminarian studying at Mt. St. Mary's in Mt. Washington to serve as a priest of our Archdiocese. As part of their diocese's program to form men to be good and holy priests, the seminary sends them out for one full school year into the parishes to work under the pastor and assist him as needed. They call this program the "seminarian intern" program.  It's a kind of mentorship / apprenticeship or residency program, designed to give them some practical experience in the midst of their academic studies and spiritual formation. Patrick will be living at St. Peter's, in the lower level of the rectory where the St. Peter office recently had been. We thank Debbie, Greg, Deacon Ron, and parish volunteers for all the help they have given in making that living space ready for him. Patrick will "hit the ground running" and ready to work when he arrives.  He will be involved in rel...

Feast of the Assumption - Special Mass Saturday

Image
This Saturday, August 15th, I will be celebrating a special Mass to honor Our Lady on the solemn feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. That's at St. Peter's at 9:00 a.m. It's such an important feast day that Catholics are ordinarily required to attend Mass on this day.  However, due to Covid the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and holy days of obligation is still temporarily suspended.  (Plus, even in normal times, the bishops don't require attendance for this day if it is on a Saturday or Monday).  Please join us if you can, and if not, please pray the Rosary (I recommend the glorious mysteries, which include the Assumption) and/or watch Archbishop's livestream Mass from the Cathedral (see nearbypost).  If you want to find out a little bit more about what Mary's Assumption into Heaven means, you can read the what the Catechism says in paragraphs 966 and 2853 . Also, if you really want to go into detail, you can read what Pope Pius XII wrot...

Archbishop's Special Annoucement Saturday

Image
Archbishop Schnurr has inidated that he will be making a "major and joyous announcement" at the 11:30 a.m. Mass this Saturday, August 15th, for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is not even telling his priests what it is, because he wants it to be a surprise. You are invited to attend that Mass to honor Our Lady and to hear this special announcement or to watch it via livestream on the Archdiocesan website . As a reminder, I will be celebrating a Mass for the feast of the Assumption at St. Peter Parish at 9:00 a.m.
