Down in Adoration Falling - Letter from Bishop Olmsted

Image
We recently celebrated the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday.  This includes a beautiful tradition of transferring Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to a chapel outside the Church for adoration, before the celebration of Good Friday and the absence of Our Lord's Eucharistic presence in churches around the globe. While honoring Our Lord, the Church sings the magnificent hymn to Our Lord in the Eucharist written 800 years ago, by St Thomas Aquinas, the Pange Lingua .  ("Sing my tongue the Savior's glory").  It includes the line "Down in adoration falling" ( veneremur cernui ). Recently Bishop Olmsted of Phoenix, Arizona, wrote a pastoral letter to his flock with this title, about the importance of understanding and living out the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. I highly recommend reading it.  It is a bit long (about 100 paragraphs) but if you read about 10 paragraphs a day, can finish it fairly quickly. I am going to adopt some of his ideas for ...

Confessions and adoration Thursday

Image
The weather looks beautiful for Thursday, May 7th.  We will have outdoor confessions and Eucharistic adoration at St. Mary's from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Confessions today at St. Peter's

Just a reminder that we will be settling into our regular schedule of outdoor confessions and adoration.  Mondays at St. Peter's 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. and Thursdays at St. Mary's from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.  So we will have confessions and adoration today at St. Peter's.  That's at the same place.  For adoration, park near the main entrance.  For confessions, please walk or drive to the picnic shelter.   For this Thursday, since there is a good possibility of rain, please make sure to check the parish calendar first before coming out to St. Mary's.  If it storms, I'll likely still have adoration for folks who want to stay in the car, but may have to cancel confession.   We'll do it like last week, I'll put the monstrance in the window and people can park in the east parking lot.
