Good Friday



I will post more materials for Good Friday soon.

But I did want to start with this.  It's a vintage clip from Venerable Fulton Sheen, a famous televangelizing Catholic bishop from New York who practically invented the idea of using communications media to preach the Gospel beginning in the '50s.  This is a Good Friday retreat.  I recommend the whole thing.  I thought parts of it were especially timely given the current health crisis (for example, from 21:40 on, the explanation of why God allows terrible suffering without appearing to intervene).

New priests' ordination video

The Archdiocese has recently published a very good 3-minute video of the ordination of three new priests for service to the Archdiocese. You will hear snippets from Archbishop's Schnurr homily and see a few scenes from that ordination Mass.  There are many powerful symbols in that ordination ceremony, including the men about to be ordained priests lying prostrate (on the ground, face down) before the altar, symbolizing that they are dying to themselves as they become "another Christ." In the photo above, after the bishop consecrates the men with prayer and laying on of hands, all of the other priests concelebrating the Mass also lay hands on them, showing that they now share in the one priesthood of Jesus Christ, the great High Priest. Ohio Heartbeat Law take immediate effect

  According to this recent news story , Ohio's "heartbeat bill" might take immediate effect in our state.  This was signed into law in 2019 by Gov. DeWine, in anticipation of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which happened yesterday.  It would ban nearly all abortions once the baby's heartbeat can be detected. That is typically at about 6 weeks gestation.  This could save many infant lives in our state.  The pro-abortion forces are already preparing legal challenges to block it, so please pray that the law will stand without interruption. We are certainly in for tumultuous times as the opportunity to defend life opens up again. Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn, pray for us!

New priests for Cincinnati

  This Saturday, May 15th, Archbishop Schnurr will be ordaining seven new men to the priesthood for service to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.  A very happy day!  You can read the personal stories of these men here .  I am sure that link will also be updated after Saturday to include stories about the ordination itself. Please pray for these men by name: Soon-to-be Fathers Michael Kapolka, Aaron Hess, Edward Hoffman, Louis Jacquemin, Elijah Puthoff, Scott Morgan, and Anthony Marcelli. In addition to this good news, two men were recently ordained to serve the Oratory of St. Philip Neri , a religious congregation of priests who will be serving some of our inner city parishes in Cincinnati: Fathers Henry Hoffman and Brent Stull, C.O.   Their brief bios are in their newsletter here ,   ( Photo here ).
